>> no matter what will there is always a little warmup in january. we had to get to the last part of it but we got it. >> at national. >> yeah. don't ask me dulles. sue will have that if you are interested in the dulles temperature. there is rain this evening. you will start with that. the traffic crawling around out there. grab your umbrella this evening. we have showers moving across now. this is the live radar northeast of town. southern sections, well, south of bowie inside the beltway, college park getting a little bit as is silver spring and then to the west great falls and reston are getting showers, too. these are moving to the east. there maybe a couple more through the evening hours, too t. doesn't look completely dry but most of you will be dry after this evening. another thing today, we started off this morning with the wind gusts, very impressive. some strong wind coming out of the south and southeast. clarksburg, maryland which is the northern section of montgomery county. one of the highest wind speed
5:50 pm
gusts i saw today, 58 miles an hour. reston was 51. and annapolis was 58 miles an hour. and there were more wind totals -- there were more wind gusts over 50 miles an hour out there than below 50 miles an hour. in terms of the extreme gusts and those calm down this afternoon. thank goodness. right now the temperature is cooled o. the high reagan national is 58. dulles is 57. and bwi marshall is 56 degrees. fairly mild for everybody. notice it is beginning to cool down to the northwest. frederick 52. hagerstown the same. martinsburg 50 and cumberland down to 45. still some 60s hanging on down 95. 61 richmond. and a few 60s for north carolina. this is unusual. notice the colder temperatures back out to the west. and the northwest. this is more like reality and some of that starts to move
5:51 pm
through overnight tonight. it will change, at least in the temperature department. some clouds at 11:00, 46. some clouds tomorrow, 4 # 39. and at noon tomorrow only 43 degrees with some clouds and looks like it will be breezy tomorrow, too. so we will be in the 40s but at times it will feel like the 30s. oh, boy what a difference a day will make, right? we started off this morning with all of this heavy rain. some of you got as much as three inches throughout and some of you didn't get a lot. it is where you were in the line of showers and thunderstorms this morning but again back to the west and the colder air. there's significant snowfall here coming through the midwest. that is not going to reach us, though. we will get the colder air but we don't have to worry about snow, at least not until the lath latter part of the week. we are chasing a storm system on friday in to saturday. and we move the rain out of here. this is midnight. we are looking at the possibility of a shower or two. the snow will stay well to the northwest of us. loads of sunshine as weget in
5:52 pm
to wednesday. but we start to watch this storm system develop. this is thursday. you see the rain in texas here. that's going to spread in to us by friday. it's going to bring us a chance of snow. it is too early to tell you when exactly it will snow and how much it will snow, but we have fairly good agreement with our guidance that in to friday and saturday all of that moisture will show up along the mid-atlantic. we will be cold enough. you can see by the temperatures late week. solate, looks like late day friday in to the day on saturday we could get snow. i'm not going to mention snowfall totals but it is -- because it is too early to do that. >> that time of the year. it appears an "american idol" finalist is already off the show. michael lynch or big mike got the boot for breaking his confidentiality agreement. word is his father told a local newspaper his son made it to the semis. he will be replaced by another singer in the top 50 qualifiers. names are being tossed around
5:53 pm
and they say jamie foxx is a strong contender to replace simon when he leaves after the season. fox performed and served as a mentor to the finalist last weekend. some are eyeing jimmy ivvine and madonna and last week they were talking about harvey leaven. >> i don't want to be general larry flat may get his day for his sg pants on the ground. harvey besides being one of the maybe idol judges coming up next season, what's the deal with general plat? he found out an idol judge wants to help him? >> yeah. i mean we got randy jackson last night aa restaurant in west hollywood and he's saying that he would like to sign this guy. he wants him to call, you know, plat was never eligible. he is 62 years old and the cut
5:54 pm
off is 28 so he was never eligible to be "american idol." but randy is smart. this could be something and even simon said that t. who knows. there's no way madonna will take this. >> i don't think think so. >> but it is nice to throw it out there any way. talk about the cast of the jersey shore. we understand they are negotiating a contract with mtv right now. the deadline to accept the network offer is by the end of business today but there is a back and forth or holdup. what's the deal? >> well, the cast wants more money. they got a huge rating at mtv last week, 4.8 million viewers. and the cast was offered $10,000 each, a week, an episode. there are 12 episodes. so they have not said yes yet and the mtv people are saying, look, we have a bunch of people in line to basically fill their shoes. so it is do or die and literally in the next 24 hours i think we will know whether the situation is a prior
5:55 pm
situation. >> somehow i'm guessing mtv will win this one. harvey leaven live in l.a. we will see tmz at 6:30 after the news edge at 6:00. now a preview of the news edge at 6:00, michelle rhee is claiming fired teachers were abusing children. now city leaders are demanding she name names. also coming up, a new mode of transportation is taking off at dulles international airport. we'll show you the new aero- train. plus, more on that unbelievable story coming out of maryland tonight. an exploding manhole cover smashes through the windshield of this suv. the news edge at 6:00 is coming up next. dreams are amazing things.
